Welcome to Workbooks.At Workbooks Online we are developing a suite of software to help small and medium size business run more effectively. Over the last 15 years the Workbooks Team has successfully built several UK companies. Each time having to deal with the frustrations and limitations of traditional software, that really didn’t meet our requirements. Because the companies we created were medium sized businesses, we couldn’t afford integrated business software like SAP or Oracle. We were left to implement standalone applications for each part of our business: Sage or Quickbooks for accounting, Goldmine, Salesforce.com or Act! for sales and marketing. These standalone applications quickly became ‘islands of information’ with duplication of data and integration between systems complex and costly. We had lots of manual processes to try and ‘plug the gaps’ and found getting management information from the systems a real challenge. Leaving us with spreadsheet after spreadsheet where we tried to slice and dice the data to measure and manage our businesses. Alongside the software challenges, we also had to hire IT staff, buy servers, manage databases, and worry about resilience of the systems and backing up our data. In general, we had a significant total cost of ownership to buy and maintain our IT business systems. Software-as-a-ServiceThe Workbooks Team has spent the last 10 years building Software-as-a-Service companies. ‘Software-as-a-Service’ or ‘SaaS’ is the latest IT industry buzzword; people also use the terms Cloud Computing, On-Demand Applications, Managed Services, Selective Outsourcing or Application Service Providers. Regardless of the name you use the concept is simple; rather than buy your own software and hardware and then figure out how to install, configure and run it, we do all that for you. We host the servers in our infrastructure and you use the applications from within your web browser. So no matter where you, are as long as you have a computer (or mobile phone!) that has Internet access you can use your business applications. We take care of the infrastructure, ensuring the systems are always available, backing up the data, upgrading hardware and software. You get a contract with guaranteed levels of service. It’s analogous to your phone provider or electricity supplier; you just expect it to work. The same is true with SaaS you just login and expect the applications to always be available. The Workbooks Team is using our experience in SaaS to build an integrated suite of business applications for Small and Medium size companies. So you have one application to manage your ‘Prospect to Cash’ process, and the same application also manages your employees, customers and suppliers. We believe that by having joined up business applications, you can speed up business processes, reduce costs and get meaningful management reports quickly, helping you to make better business decisions. Large companies already have these systems, but also have large IT departments to make them work. By delivering Workbooks applications using the SaaS model we are able to share the cost of development and delivery across many organizations, not just one. We will be updating our website closer to the launch of our service, but right now our efforts are on development and not sales and marketing.
