Converted leads

When converting to an opportunity, the original lead record stays with a status of either converted or converted - no opportunity. Can these records be deleted or are they required?
What purpose do they have (if any) when converted? I'm looking at ways of keeping the database clean and wondering if I need to keep these records or not.

The converted Leads remain for historical purposes and allow statistical analysis e.g. How many leads did we create in each month last year? How does that compare with this year? etc. etc.

If historical Sales Leads are not of use to the operations at your company then you may delete them.

NOTE: Converted Sales Leads do not appear in Search results, but they are available in the Leads landing page, Reporting, and the Related Items tab of the associated Opportunity.
