How do I add a custom field?

External Posted: 2012-01-03 22:10

How would I go about adding a custom field to the contact screen? I'm looking to add URL-based fields for Twitter, facebook and LInkedIn.

Thank you

Hello,

Good news!  This can be easily achieved in Workbooks.

You need to add Custom Fields with the URL Data Type.  The means they'll get a nice button next to them you can click that will take you to the relevant webpage.  The URL section on this page explains what a URL Custom Field can do.

NOTE: For URL links to work correctly, you should ensure that your browser is not blocking pop-ups.  More info on Pop-up Blockers.

You need to add custom fields that will either hold a full URL, or a username (or something similar) that's appended to, or included within, the URL.  For example, Twitter profile pages consist of a standard URL - http://twitter.com/#!/ - plus a user name - workbooks e.g. http://twitter.com/#!/workbooks

Here's the definition of the Custom Fields:

Here's an example of URLs in action.  As outlined above, the Twitter username field only needs to be populated with a twitter username.  However, it's appended to the URL in the Custom Field's definition (as shown above).  Clicking the button takes you directly to the relevant Twitter profile.  The LinkedIn field is simpler; It just opens the URL that's entered in the field.

NOTE: The system this screenshot has been taken on has been customised using Custom Form Layouts.  This following link takes you to an example explaining how to customise an Organisation form, but it is also relevant to other record types, such as People, Sales Leads, Cases, etc.
