Saving Views - Why does the Subject, Name column not remember the width I set it at?

I have a My Open Activities view which has a very wide column for Subject. I have reduced the width of this field repeatedly and saved the resulting amended view but the change isn't retained. The next time I start up the view, the orignal width is back. When I save the view I get the Success message so the system thinks it's doing something/the right thing.

The Name, Subject or the leftmost column have a "fill" property.  As a result the second column can sometimes be displayed a bit far away from the first column.

 

This presentation issue can be resolved by increasing the column width of the rightmost column so that the "fill space" available is minimal.  Resize the first column (the one that's "auto-filling") to the correct size, then resize the other column(s) so that the horizontal grid width is used.  Save the view.
